About Earth Genome

Imagine a world where every decision, by governments, investors, and communities, is powered by real-time environmental intelligence. A world where we can see deforestation as it happens, trace emissions across the globe, and intervene before damage is done. That’s the world Earth Genome is building.

Earth Genome is a mission-driven nonprofit at the cutting edge of artificial intelligence, earth observation, and environmental science. We create powerful, actionable tools that transform how the world understands and responds to nature and climate. Our cross-disciplinary team of scientists, technologists, designers, and strategists builds open, scalable solutions, like Earth IndexAmazon Mining Watch and contributions to Climate TRACE, that help decision-makers act faster and more effectively in the face of urgent environmental challenges.

We believe the path to a sustainable future must be data-driven, transparent, and equitable. That’s why we design user-centered applications that turn complex environmental data into clear, practical insight—empowering people, economies, and ecosystems to thrive together. And as a workplace, we bring that same care to our team—offering flexible, people-first policies, including unlimited time off and fully covered health benefits.

ABOUT THE ROLE (REMOTE)
We’re looking for a T-shaped engineer with a strong foundation in geospatial; someone who’s excited to work across the tech stack and isn’t afraid to dive into ambiguous, fast-evolving problems. You might be passionate about machine learning, data pipelines, infrastructure, APIs, design systems, or all of the above. If you're mission-aligned, creative, and energized by building tools that make complex data usable for frontline environmental defenders, you're who we want to hear from.

In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to work across our diverse product and partner portfolio, including contributing to the design, development, and scaling of software systems that support environmental impact.

You’ll report to a technical lead and collaborate with a small team of mission-driven engineers and researchers.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, build, and maintain performant, reliable systems for interactive analysis and decision-making, from frontend to database

  • Work across disciplines to translate ideas into technical solutions—this might mean building a new map-based feature, designing a scalable API, tuning a vector tile service, or integrating a generative agent into a workflow

  • Participate in architectural and product design conversations with cross-functional teammates

  • Write clean, testable code and contribute to a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement

  • Collaborate with users and partners to rapidly iterate toward useful tools

  • Learn new technologies and share your knowledge with the team

What We're Looking For

We’re seeking a T-shaped engineer with deep geospatial expertise and the versatility to contribute across the stack. Specifically:

  • Strong experience (typically 5+ years or equivalent) developing production-grade software and systems

  • Demonstrated expertise in geospatial, including:
    • Solid foundation in GIS data types and tools (raster/vector, tiles, projections, GDAL, etc.)
    • Experience with cloud-native geospatial patterns

  • Proficiency in at least one of the following technical areas:
    • Back end: Go, Python, or similar; PostgreSQL/PostGIS; API development; cloud infrastructure (AWS or GCP)
    • Front end: React/Next.js, TypeScript, component systems; web mapping libraries (Mapbox, Maplibre, Leaflet)
    • AI/Agents: LLMs, embeddings, prompt engineering, vector databases, or autonomous agents in production

  • Fluency in modern development practices, including: Version control (Git), CI/CD workflows and testing practices, Containerization tools such as Docker and Kubernetes

Who You Are

  • You’re comfortable working in a distributed team and collaborating across time zones
  • You bring a user- and mission-oriented mindset and are eager to build tools that make a real impact
  • You thrive in ambiguous, evolving roles and are excited to help shape the path as the work unfolds

Work Environment & Compensation

  • Location: Remote-first; U.S.-based preferred. Exceptional candidates outside the U.S. may be considered as contractors.
  • Salary: $130,000–$180,000 USD depending on experience and the role you pitch
  • Benefits: 100% company-paid health care coverage for you and your family, flexible schedule, and unlimited PTO.
  • Team Culture: Mission-driven, highly collaborative, and rooted in curiosity, experimentation, and equity
  • Travel: Occasional travel for in-person team meetups (optional but encouraged)

Why Work With Us

At Earth Genome, we’re not just building technology—we’re working toward a more just and sustainable planet. Joining our team means:

  • Creating open-source, scalable tools that empower environmental defenders and advance climate and environmental justice
  • Working in a culture that values experimentation, equity, and human-centered design
  • Being part of a team that believes great work comes from diverse perspectives and lived experiences

TO APPLY
Please submit a brief cover note (no more than 1 page) along with a portfolio, GitHub link, or examples of real-world projects you’ve worked on.

Your cover note should include:

  • Why Earth Genome?
2–3 bullets on what excites you about our mission and why you want to collaborate with our team

  • Your technical edge
2–3 bullets describing the technologies, tools, or types of problems where you feel strongest. Be specific about your expertise in geospatial, and include any relevant experience across back end, front end, AI/agents, or DevOps

  • (Optional but encouraged) If you used AI tools (like Gemini or Claude) to help craft your responses, feel free to include the prompts you used. We're interested in how you think and work, not just the output.

We believe great teams are built on diversity of thought, background, and identity. We welcome applicants from all walks of life—especially those historically underrepresented in tech and climate.
